Picture of the Week - 4/8/2022

 Happy post-spring break POTW!

Quinn and I went to Sandestin for a nice visit with the guys he's going to Georgia Southern with and their moms.  We had a really good time - and it was so nice to get away for a while!  I really enjoyed getting to know the other moms and visiting somewhere new.  Sandestin was fun - and has a ton of activities - but the crowded beaches are just not my scene.  I'm not going to complain about the little beach hut with the frozen drinks though!

Here are a couple of pictures of our group.  This is such a good group of kids.  I am so excited for Quinn as he gets ready to head to Statesboro with them.  They got their dorm assignment this week too - and I think it's the best dorm on campus.  They have a 4 bedroom, 2 bath apartment with a full kitchen and a washer/dryer in the suite.  Each boy gets his own room with a full size bed.  I mean...  this is nicer than anywhere I stayed until we bought our first house!  The dorm is also pretty much smack dab in the middle of campus and directly across the street from the food hall.  It's going to be perfect for them!

Tomorrow Bob, Zane and Beck are taking off for a visit with Bob's dad (Hi Bob and Phyllis - sorry I'm going to miss the trip) before heading onto Jacksonville for a wrestling tournament on Sunday.  I'm staying home to get caught up on my HR class.  Boring... but I have a paper to write and a quiz to take and about 600 pages to read.  I really wish I were exaggerating.  I hate that I'm missing out on some fun...  I mean who doesn't love the free manager's reception at the Embassy Suites?  But I need to be responsible for a minute and get myself ready for this certification exam...  Adulting sucks sometimes.

Picture of the Week - 7/15/2021

 Man vacation week goes so fast!  Too fast!

We had a great week at the beach.  We had a different location on the island this year, which honestly we didn't love...  but it was a great week to relax and reconnect and get away from reality for a while.  I think it was especially timely after our crazy June!

We did, of course, miss Spencer a ton.  It was weird not having him there.  I definitely had this "why take pictures without everyone" mindset - so I took hardly any pictures the whole week.  It may have also been an intentional effort to get off my phone more.  I did get this awesome shot of Zane and Beck in the "big waves" from Tropical Storm Elsa - which really didn't impact our weather much at all, but made for a few days of angry ocean!

This week the boys did a wrestling camp at the high school - which was fun for them and easy for us!  Quinn has been so busy this week between volunteering at the camp, working and tackling some SAT tutoring - oh plus socializing!  I haven't hardly seen him since we got home - exactly the way a 17 year old summer should be!

Spencer has had a big week too.  He transitioned from the 10-person ExCEL portion of his summer to the 220ish-person Citadel Success Institute portion.  For the ExCEL kids, it's not been a huge change...  they moved to a new barracks and have a LOT more meetings and things they need to do.  I think they are getting  a lot less sleep too, but they aren't going through the shock that the other CSI kids are dealing with.  I think around half dozen kids quit the program within the first 2 days.  There's a reason they call The Citadel the "road less traveled".  It's not an easy path.

This weekend - we are back to tackling the bedroom move project - I'm pretty sure we can get Quinn moved this weekend assuming our new rug from Wayfair gets delivered on time.  I'm determined to get as much as we can done this weekend because football starts in like 10 days - and there goes our evenings and weekends again.  LOL  It's our crazy life and I love it.

Picture of the Week - 4/29/2021

 We snuck away!

Bob and I have left the boys home ALONE!!  We have, of course, left them home alone before, but never overnight - much less for a few days.  It's terrifying - and exhilarating!

When our springtime cruise was cancelled this year, we didn't really think much of it...  until we realized that we really missed having some one-on-one time to focus on each other.  We aren't (and never have been) trying to "fix" anything, but any relationship needs tending to regularly.  A marriage is no different.  

I don't think I really agree with people who say it's "work" to cultivate a happy marriage because it doesn't (98% of the time) FEEL like work.  But I do agree that putting a priority on staying connected, finding activities that we both enjoy, and just spending time together is a pretty key component to a good relationship!  So this weekend - is all about US!  And I've been looking forward to this for months now!

Here's the view from our back porch.  The place we rented is so nice!  It's a little studio apartment rental with an amazing back deck - complete with rocking chairs overlooking Lake Chatuge in Hiawassee Ga.  Hiawassee is a wee little town just across the North Carolina border in northwest Georgia.  

We are here until Sunday.  We brought games and books and sewing and snacks.  There's a hummingbird feeder with frequent guests.  I could live here!  It's so peaceful and quiet.

Meanwhile...  at home...

Quinn has Zane and Beckett duty tonight.  Tomorrow is PROM!  I am actually really sad that we are missing prom, but when we scheduled this trip, prom was scheduled for next weekend and when they started increasing the number of people who could attend, they had to move to a different date so everyone could participate.  We have tuxes and ordered flowers and the boys have plans.  I've pleaded with them to get pictures - so everyone cross your fingers!

While the big guys are at prom, the younger ones (not allowed to call them little anymore...  as Zane is almost as tall as me now) are gonna hang with my parents.  

And throughout, Ozzie and Willow will pace the house worried sick that we are never coming home.

I am so appreciative that we are able to have a weekend like this.  I'm so thankful that I have Bob to share this with!  It's going to be an amazing weekend!

PS - Today was Spencer's last day of high school.  Oh in the world...  literally...  I just can't even wrap my head around that... (he has some AP tests and a couple of finals before he's done-done, but no more high school classes for the eldest Bovy boy.  

Picture of the Week - 4/8/2021

 This week is Spring Break and we took advantage!

Bob and I grabbed Berber and Pappy, Zane and Beck and headed for the Smoky Mountains.  We could not have had better weather.  It was amazing!  We stayed in a cabin perched atop a mountain, which made for slightly nerve-wracking drives in exchange for breathtaking views.  We ate a picnic lunch halfway through the National Park.  We visited Dollywood, saw the Dixie Stampede Dinner Show, and ate dinner-plate sized cinnamon rolls.  We played cards, pool, chilled in a hot tub, enjoyed drinks on the back porch.  We laughed and really just enjoyed.  It was a perfect mini trip!  (That also left me wanting more travel and less staring-at-my-computer-screen!)  Good thing we have lots of stuff planned for the coming months... stay tuned!

I've had regular contact with both Spencer, who is in NC at a cabin with his buddies, and Quinn, who is in Orlando doing the theme park circuit with a friend of his.  They both seem to be having a great time and enjoying the break from work and school.  Spencer comes home tomorrow and Quinn is expected sometime Sunday.

This trip was a bit of a preview into what things will be like in the not-distant future as we transition from a family of 6 down to 5 and finally settle at 4 for a few years.  It's...  bittersweet.  I know we have done our jobs and they are ready to fly.  I can't wait to watch them spread their wings and GO!  But I am going to miss them.  It feels funny without all those faces around the table.  

A week or so ago the high school compiled a list of all the upcoming important dates for the seniors.  It was kind of daunting!  There is a lot of stuff crammed into the next 5 weeks or so.  Spencer will be having an in-person graduation.  We are pretty excited that we will get to watch him "walk" even if it is via limited tickets which means we can't take everyone we want to - including all our kids...  He's got finals, AP exams, Senior breakfast, graduation, parties, etc. etc. etc.  

On top of all of that, he's about kick wrestling preparation back into gear.  Spence has earned a tryout with the Citadel wrestling team and he wants to give it a go.  We aren't really sure what that means yet, but he's going to start hitting the mats again a few times a week to prep for whatever comes.  He's also participating in a couple of wrestling tournaments this May (which is part of the the "stuff planned" I referred to above.)  It's going to be a busy couple of months...  and then he will be off to Charleston.  WOW!

If we are connected on Facebook, you may have already seen my request for you to send Spencer a note that he will receive as part of the high school's "blue envelope" tradition.  Anyone can send him a note of congratulations or wish him well.  All you have to do is send a letter to the school with his name on it - Spencer Bovenizer, c/o West Forsyth High School, 4155 Drew Rd, Cumming, GA 30040.  The letters are being collected from Monday through the end of the month.  He would LOVE to hear from you!

Picture of the Week - 2/28/2019

Well...  BC4C 2019 is now behind us and...  phew!  What an amazing week!

We had SO much fun.  We drank so many adult beverages.  We ate so much food.  We laughed so hard.  We spent SO much time sitting around doing nothing.  We listened to SO much good music.  We saw SO many good friends.  We said SO many O-H-I-Os!

We are refreshed and recharged and (after a good night's sleep or two) will be ready to get after it again!

Major props and sincere thanks to my mom and dad for taking such good care of the boys (both 2 legged and 4 legged) while we were gone.  They are a handful for sure, but we came home to a clean house and dinner!  Love you Berber and Pappy!

And while cruises are ALL fun, this particular cruise also has a great cause.  The whole point of the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer mission is to raise money for cancer research.  We WILL beat cancer!  And this year over 3.2 million dollars were raised.  3.2 MILLION!  That's amazing and wonderful and such a cool thing to be such a small part of!

Our hearts are SO full!

(Now back to reality...  Bob's got his lacrosse team out at a practice right now prepping for their first game on Saturday.  Quinn and Spencer have a game on Saturday too.  Bring it on!)

Picture of the Week - 7/13/2018

Do you believe in magic?  

Not the David Copperfield kind...  the real life, actual MAGIC that happens all the time.  The tricky part is recognizing that it's happening and then calling it what it is - SPECIAL!

Maybe you don't call it magic.  Maybe you call it fate.  Or divine intervention?  Maybe karma?  If you believe in luck (which I don't), you may think of these things as "lucky".  

For me, it's magic!  

We experienced a WHOLE lot of magic last week on vacation.  I mean really, just BEING on vacation is magic.  The idea that we can get paid to hang out at a gorgeous beach house on a gorgeous beach is magic.  The idea that we have enough money saved up to be able to afford to pay for 2 houses for a whole week.  The mere fact that there IS a beach as lovely as St. George Island that allows us to share it.  None of this is a given...  all of it could go away if we don't make good decisions and do the "right" things.  It's easy to take these things for granted.  It's far too easy to not see the magic all around.

One of the coolest things that I've ever experienced happened while we were relaxing at the beach last week.  This is the first time in several years that we've been able to vacation over the 4th of July and one of the things I was most looking forward to was watching fireworks on the beach.  As we got ready last Wednesday for the "show", the sky started clouding up and you could hear rumbles of thunder in the distance.  As nightfall approached, the house was surrounded with storm clouds.  There were storms and clouds to the east, big storms out to sea, and a lot of activity in the sky behind the house facing inland.  We stood on the beach in front of our house, adult beverages in hand and were amazed by the fact that it wasn't raining on our little stretch of island.  Darkness fell and people up and down the beach started setting off fireworks.  I'm not sure where these people shopped for these displays, but I'm sure glad they did!  These "amateurs" were lighting fireworks that rivaled displays at profession events.  They were huge and numerous and beautiful.  There was one group of BIG fireworks to our left - another to our right, just a couple houses away.  Down the beach farther, you could see the "official" St. George Island fireworks display.  In between these "big" ones were dozens and dozens groups setting off smaller versions of these big spectacles that on their own would have been potentially a bit disappointing, but put all together was quite the show.

We've been on beaches during the 4th of July in the past.  It's always awe inspiring and fun.  But this year, Mother Nature decided to join in on the act and lit the skies up with these storm clouds.  Throughout the fireworks shows there were brilliant flashes of lightening literally ALL around us.  One second there was an amazing, brilliant explosion of manufactured color and sound.  Then the next, a streak of lightening light the entire beach up for a split second.  All around us.  We literally just stood in the middle, slack jawed in wonder.  (Or at least I did...)  

It was magic!

Actually, the whole week was fun of laughs and cards and playing and eating and chilling.  I read a book on the beach.  I can't even remember the last time I was that relaxed.  It was exactly what I needed!

In other, slightly less magical, news...  

- Zane got himself a nasty ear infection while we were on vacation.  We know knew were the closest urgent care is to St. George Island.  Then he got swimmers ear on top of it...  he was a miserable little dude.  All better now!

- Then just as his meds were starting to work, he got his braces on!  Honestly, I think he's handled them far better than I expected him to!  He's not even complaining about pain any more.  We're hoping that missing tooth of his will finally decide to make an appearance now that the braces are making room for it.  Picture below is of Zane and Berber after camp on Wednesday.  He was so excited to surprise her with his new braces!  (No idea why there's a sticker on his head...)

- In other teeth news...  Quinn had his wisdom teeth removed this morning.  He's currently sleeping off the anesthesia with a bag of frozen peas on his face.  He did very well and I'm sure will be back to normal in no time.  His swelling isn't even that bad!  (Spencer needs his wisdom teeth out too, but we aren't sure when we can do it because he's literally in sports year-round.  Thinking he's going to have to pick a wrestling tourney to skip...)

- Speaking of Spencer, he's currently on an overnight workout trip with part of the football team over in Carrollton, GA.  They will be back sometime late tomorrow.  He's enjoying football, but still not as much as he enjoyed wrestling. His games start mid-August, which will be here before we know it!  

This weekend, aside from nursing Quinn back to health, we have no plans for the first time since...  um...  Easter weekend?  Maybe???  No idea what we are going to get into.  It might be as simple as sitting up at the pool and watching Zane and Beck play.  Come to think of it, that sounds like Magic!

Hi everyone!

Quick email/update from Glasgow before I attempt to get some sleep tonight.  

All is well!  Class is fine.  Trip was uneventful.  Scottish weather is amazing!  They are breaking high temp records this week - and I'm super glad to be here during nice weather!  It makes everything much better - even if the sun doesn't go down until after 10 and rises again around 3...  

Sounds like all is well state side.  My little guys are having a blast with Berber and Pappy at Cooper's baseball tournament in Panama City and Bob's holding down the fort at home with the big guys.  Here are a couple of pictures of them!  

Sunday I leave here bright and early and head for St. George Island.  1 day down, 2 to go!

Happy Middle of June!

I'm so excited that it's Thursday and this week is winding down!  We've got a quick weekend get-away planned and need tomorrow to get here so we can get the show on the road!

This week Zane and Beck went to STEM camp at their elementary school.  They loved it!  (We loved it too because of all the summer camps they are doing this year, this camp had the nicest hours for working parents! HA!)  I kind of love that they went from all sports all the time last week to STEM stuff this week.  Well-rounded dudes!  We bumped Zane up a grade for this camp so he could work on the Minecraft programming.  He had a blast!  (Except for recess time.  The feedback we got was that there were far too many kids on the playground to have "real fun".)  

Today Spencer left with his football team at 6 AM to travel over to Auburn for a morning of 7v7 action.  He left there with a friend - and fellow wrestler - to head down to New Orleans for a wrestling dual.  We'll hopefully be able to keep up with his results somehow...  I'm hoping he remembers to buy a T-shirt because it would be cool to have a "Jazz Town Duals" shirt!

Quinn's lacrosse team is playing in Asheville, NC.  So we're all heading over there for a quick mini-break from reality.  :)

Picture of the Week - 4/5/2018

Hi all!

Greetings from the United Kingdom!  We are having a great time on our spring break adventure.  We have been all over London and are halfway through our Edinburgh trip.  We've seen a LOT of stuff!  Museums, undergrounds, buses, trains, old stuff, new stuff, traffic, castles, dungeons, gardens, snow, rain, sun, lots of crowds - and we've had lots of fun!  Its super cool to get to spend quality time with people I like!  :)  I *do* really wish Zane and Beck were here with us too.  I think (OK, I know) that they are enjoying their time with Berber and Pappy more than they would enjoy this whirlwind tour, but I miss those little guys!

Here are a couple of fun pictures from today.   Tomorrow we are going to head toward Hollyrood and explore the palace a bit and see what other kind of fun adventures we can get into on our last day together!

Picture of the Week - 3/1/2018

Did you miss me last week?

So I had TOTALLY planned to send an email out last Thursday from our cruise.  I even had the draft all set up so all I had to do was attach a picture and hit send.  I didn't even THINK about it until Friday night.  LOL  THAT'S how relaxed and disconnected we were last week.  And it was awesome!

A big thank you to my parents for watching the boys for us every year so we can go on the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer.  This was our 6th one (crazy to think Beck was 4 months old the first time we went!) and they are more fun every year.  This year's cruise raised 3 million dollars for cancer research.  It's a GREAT cause and a GREAT vacation!  And we may already be looking forward to February 23rd, 2019...

Here is a fun picture from our trip.  We had a lot of laugh with Greg and Chrissy and it's so fun to catch up with them every year!

We did miss a ton of stuff - including more HS lacrosse games for Spencer - one Freshman and one JV - both wins.  We also missed his participation at the Georgia Freshman State wrestling tournament, where he came in 3rd.  I think Spencer has played in 5 high school games and tonight is the first one I get to see - if it doesn't get rained out.  

This weekend kicks off games for Zane and Quinn too - and it's thankfully going to be a nice, sunny weekend!  Spencer has a game on Saturday too!  Then I'm off to a week of customer visits starting with travel on Sunday evening and wrapping up on Thursday.  I sure hope it's warmer in St. Louis and Boston than I think it's going to be...

We have been having a great week down in Orlando.  Lots of fun - and lots of cold!  We are all exhausted, but it's that happy-memories-have-been-made exhaustion.

Picture of the Week - 12/28/2017

We are streeettttttccccccchhhhhhhhhiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnngggggggg out the Christmas magic for as long as we can!

By shifting into DISNEY MAGIC mode!!!

I can hardly even believe we pulled it off, but we DID!  We surprised the boys with a trip to Disney World as part of their Christmas gifts.  So FUN!  I made them jump threw an elaborate scavenger hunt to find clues and gifts with words on them that spelled out "We are going to Disney World on Saturday"!  I think I am just as excited as they are!

I was packing today with Quinn and he reminded me of some Disney Magic that we had sprinkled around the last time we went to WDW - which was over 5 years ago!  I had forgotten ALL about this, but he remembered.  Because magic is MEMORABLE!  Several months before our last trip Quinn lost his favorite stuffed animal friend, Stegie.  We looked everywhere for that stuff stegosaurus and could not find him.  Quinn was VERY sad...  During a purge of stuff out of the toy room, Bob and I found him!  We were thrilled - and also feeling mischievous.  So instead of giving Stegie back to Quinn, we hid him and smuggled him into our Disney house, where Quinn "found" him waiting on his bed.  He was flabbergasted  - and totally bought the "Disney Magic" explanation.  And he still remembers it all this time later.  

I love that!  

I can't wait to make more memories with these boys next week in Disney (and LegoLand).  And I am so excited that Berber and Pappy are coming with us!!

Picture of the Week - 6/22/2017

Here are my favorite pictures of each of my boys from vacation - and a priceless group shot too!

We had a great week!  

The boys had a great time.  They all fished and swam and jumped waves.  The little guys were SO DIFFERENT this year than last year.  They weren't timid at all!  (It would have been slightly more relaxing if Beck had been just a *little* timid and at least stayed where he could reach!)  They learned how to snorkel and swim in the pool too.  No more floaty vests for us!  Wow!  We've been dragging those things around to all water-related activities for like 7 or 8 years!  I won't miss em!

We played games and drank wine and ate oysters 3 times!  We kicked back and just enjoyed the down time.  Nowhere to be.  No schedules.  It was lovely!

As much fun as we had, it was pretty hard to hit real life again this week.  The boys are all over the place - different activities, different places, different times.  Work is work.  I suppose they call it the grind for a reason.  I'm off today for a short overnight to TN and then heading to Orlando for a conference on Sunday.  Vacation seems almost like a distant memory already.  I suppose we just need to start looking forward to the next adventure!

Greetings from St. George Island Florida - aka the Forgotten Coast

We are having a great vacation!  I was really worried the weather would be a problem - and it was the first day we were down here - but it's not been an issue since!  We've dodged some storms and had to adjust our "beach routine" a bit, but we're rolling with the flow and having a blast!

More pictures and stories later...  I want to get back to doing nothing.  :)

Here's a picture, taken at 2:20 today from our deck.  This is why they call the place the forgotten coast.  I love that there are so few people here!  It's just beautiful and relaxing and exactly what we needed!

Picture of the Week - 5/18/2017

Middle of May - nearly the end of the school year - almost summertime - and we're gearing up for all kinds of fun!

Let's start with a countdown that Bob and I have had for a year...  next week we get to go on a grown-up trip to a place we've never been to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary.  I'm so ridiculously excited!  We're heading to a resort in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.  We have very few plans outside of our pre-purchased tickets on the "brew bus" to visit local craft breweries.  This trip marks a pretty cool milestone - and also survival of another school year.  So excited...  more on Maine next week!

And then there's Spencer, who's got just 6 (officially) days of middle school left.  In reality, it's more like 4...  one day is the 8th grade picnic and I am not going to even TRY to make him go to school on the last day.  Hard to believe he's done with Vickery Creek Middle School.  It treated him (and us) very very well.  He's ready for high school.  He's MORE ready for the summer and has big plans to get himself back into "football shape".  He wants to work out, lift weights, train, condition and eat.  He's got a goal to spend just about every day in the HS weight room - and between the football, wrestling and lacrosse teams, there are plenty of opportunities.  He also wants to put on 20 lbs of muscle weight.  So we are stocking up on eggs and protein powder and chicken and muscle milk.  I'm guessing my food budget will be getting bigger at about the same rate as he does...

Quinn is wrapping up 7th grade in fine style.  He's not flashy and not making any big leaps, but he's the epitome of slow and steady wins the race.  He's become known around our neighborhood as the "responsible Bovenizer" - which is accurate - and has several little jobs lined up for the summer.  He'll be dog sitting and garden watering and stuff like that.  He's got a few summer camps lined up, but for the most part I think he's looking forward to some downtime - and probably too much video gaming.

Zane killed first grade.  He had a really awesome year.  He's reading chapter books and does math in his head and generally blows me away.  His sweet teacher is moving from 1st grade down to kindergarten next year and has told us she's going to try to get Beckett.  We've ALL warned her that Beck is not Zane...  really, really not Zane!  

Beckett is also changing schools and next week marks our LAST WEEK of daycare.  READ THAT AGAIN!!!  After more than 15 STRAIGHT years, we will be day care free.  I. Just. Don't. Know....  Beck and Zane are going to a couple of different places over the summer.  They are doing a couple of weeks at the Y camp - where they will get exhausted and filthy doing real summer camp stuff - and they are doing the rest of the summer at a camp hosted by our elementary school.  I'm guessing there won't be too many kindergartners in the Whitlow summer camp.  I imagine it's mostly for kids who are already at the school.  I am not the LEAST bit worried about sending Beckett.  He's so so so ready to move on and up.  He is a 15 year old dude in a 5 year old body.  Attitude for days.  Last weekend at his last lacrosse practice, he became the enforcer and TOOK OUT this annoying little kid who was bugging everyone else.  He also won every face off he attempted.  He's a special dude.  Here are a couple fun pictures of Beck.  One is him before school one day looking way older than 5 (and yes, that IS a fidget spinner) and the other is him sporting his cool "I just joined the pack" t-shirt from kindergarten orientation.

This gorgeous house was ours for a week!

I may have forced a photo session, but I LOVE the results!

The views were stunning!  We got to see a storm come in, which just made things more interesting - and beautiful - from our oceanfront house.  

The boys all enjoyed the ocean and the sand this year.  It was SO nice to not have swim diapers at the beach!!!  It's been a LONG time since we were able to relax as much as we did this year.

Beckett loved the pool and got so brave after a few days.  By the end of the week he was swimming under water and leaving the sides of the pool!

Zane lost his front teeth on the last night.  Thank goodness!  His little smile was so wonky.  I love his little face without front teeth!
