Picture of the Week - 11/17/2022

This week is so fun!  And so full of STUFF!  The kind of stuff that's leaving me mentally stressed and emotionally excited!

My parents are currently in the Caribbean somewhere.  Bob is in the frozen tundra (Fargo, ND) for work.  And my big boys are still at school.  This time next week - they will ALL be in my house.  I mean, if that's not enough to make a mama heart happy, I'm not sure what would do it.

In the meantime, I've got lists (to-dos and check varieties) and a spreadsheet of what needs to be done when.  (Turkey comes out today because it's an enormous beast.)  I haven't hosted Thanksgiving since before Spencer was born.  Feeling a little rusty - and also up for the challenge!  (So long as there's wine involved!)

In the middle of all the Thanksgiving prep - I'm also trying to get things ready for Spencer's first trip home since August and Quinn's return tomorrow as well.  I want to surround them with reasons to want to come home again - college parents out there, I know you get this...  I'm making Chicken n Dumplins for Quinn tomorrow.  I've got Chili fixins for Saturday.  Oh and the wrestling club's annual Thanksgiving Duals is on Tuesday.  I may be running all stuff that happens off the mats.  (Concessions, Hospitality, Volunteers, Signage, Decorations, etc.)  I love this tourney - it's my favorite of the year.  It's at our own high school.  It's very early in the season - so no stress or pressure.  It's MY official launch of the holiday season.  And I get to spend the whole day with my friends.  It's a really fun day.  (But it's also a lot of work!)

It'll all get done.  Or it won't.  No one is going to die.  And all will be well.

I'm grateful to get to live this crazy, chaotic life.  Wouldn't trade it for the world.  (Although I would prefer Bob be here instead of freezing in North Dakota.  And he needs a hat, right?!?!?)

Picture of the Week - 12/16/2021

You all already know that our lives are totally consumed by wrestling...  but this week it feels a little like we are over the hump of all the hard work I am responsible for coordinating!  We are nearly to the stage of getting to watch and enjoy!

Bob and I chaperoned - and fed - 26 kids and 3 coaches last weekend in a giant cabin in Gatlinburg.  It was exhausting - and one of the best things I've gotten to do in a long time!  The weekend was so fun for those kids - they had a blast and made some great memories!  There was very little sleep - but also very little drama.  We even hosted a cookout for all the parents on Saturday and piled about 30 more people into the house.  I love that wrestling family of ours and am so very grateful that we still have Zane and Beck because I can't imagine being nearly "done" with our time as Team Parents/Booster Club Presidents/Organizers of the Chaos.  Serving this team fills a piece of my heart!  I love every stressed out minute of it.

Last night was Quinn's senior night.  He lost - and so did the team.  Not the best senior night ever, but today everyone is back to work and looking to get the job done this weekend.  I didn't get a single picture from Senior night - because I am TERRIBLE at taking pictures.  We did have a photographer there, so eventually we will get some great pictures I am sure...  but I should have at least gotten one of our family.  Sheesh...  I need to work on that!

I did grab some pictures that some other folks took from last weekend that I thought would be fun to share.  :)

Tomorrow we get Spencer back!  I'm excited that he's going to get to spend a good few weeks with us.  I think he needs to be back around the 8th, but the details are a little sketchy...  the wrestling team responsibilities don't become clear as far in advance as I would like!!

Then on Saturday I get to take Zane and Beck to a tournament.  It's a pretty big one - so I expect they will each get a number of matches.  It should be a fun time!  After Saturday - aside from practices - we are done until after Christmas.  I think everyone needs a little break - and I know Quinn needs a minute to let his body recover some.  I'm guessing Spencer is the same way, but he never complains.

SO hard to believe that Christmas is next week!  I just about finished up all my wrapping and am definitely done with my buying!!!  I don't even have to bake this year - because all of the boys are being careful with their weight right now (not cutting, but need to maintain...  so cookies will have to wait).  It's just about time to just chill and enjoy each other!  WOO HOO!!!

Have a great week - and enjoy the last of whatever preparations you are doing.  Remember what a blessing it is to have people to work for!  It means you are connected and needed and loved.  That's not a small thing!

Picture of the Week - 12/9/2021

TRUTH - None of what you are about to read is me complaining in any way.  FOR REAL!  I have loved every step of this project!

But

It's a LOT of work layered into a busy time of year...

Tomorrow morning Bob and I are packing up the Bob-mobile with a bunch of food and supplies and a handful of kids to head to Gatlinburg.  We are chaperoning the wrestling team in a gigantic cabin for a weekend tournament.  We have 26 kids and 5 adults going.  I've put together the food plan, transportation arrangements, found and booked the cabin, and worked out room assignments.  I have made some food, will make a bunch more over the next 3 days, and have spent several sleepless nights worrying about what I'm forgetting.

I'm not complaining.  I really love it all.  I'm going to miss it SOOOOOO much next year.  Thank God (for realz) that I have 2 more boys that I get to do this with in a few short years.  I'm not ready to be done.

Is it a lot of work - Hell yes.  Is it worth it - Hell yes!

My only wish (not a complaint) was that wrestling season wasn't completely overlapped with Christmas season.

Have a fun week - and wish us luck in our trek to TN.  (And please let 8 loaves of bread be enough...)

Picture of the Week - 12/2/2021

 Did you miss me?

Did anyone even notice I was "missing" the last 2 weeks?  (crickets)

I didn't really MEAN to skip POTW 2 weeks in a row.  I never really MEAN to skip it at all.  But life happens and my memory is sometimes bad and sometimes I'm just not in the mood to stop having fun (or working) to do an email.  And what probably sounds like a ridiculously lame excuse, my employer just increased their "security" and I can't get personal email on my work computer any more.  Sounds like a minor thing...  is not a minor thing...  I fully acknowledge that this is a first world problem, but it's cause some upheaval in my routines!

So what have we been up to?  Mostly wrestling.  And visiting with family.  We got to enjoy Spencer being home for Thanksgiving week - although we didn't actually SEE much of him as he was off having fun with his friends the majority of his break.  It's nice to see that he's doing well.  He also got to wrestle here in Georgia at Life University and won his first couple of collegiate matches.  Pretty fun!  Picture of him in his old West singlet because he was wrestling as an "unattached" wrestler while the Citadel starters were competing at a tournament at the Naval Academy.  I DO still long to get a picture of him in a Citadel singlet...  someday!

On Tuesday of  Thanksgiving week West held our annual Thanksgiving Duals.  It's my favorite tourney of the year.  I think it's because of the time of year maybe...  it's the first big tourney we do with local teams every year.  It's home and I really enjoy hanging out with all the other West families for the day.  I've no idea what I'm going to do next year when I'm not in charge any more...  Maybe they will let me run concessions just for fun!  Quinn had a pretty good tournament and the team is looking really strong again.  It should be a great season again for West Wrestling.

Zane and Beck got to compete recently too!  Zane went undefeated and Beck went 3-2.  Both boys look really good and are having a blast.  They are working 4 days a week at getting better!  We have a couple of weeks before they get to compete again, but I'm already looking forward to it!

In between all the wrestling we got to have a really nice dinner out with my parents, had a football party with all the coaches and families from Bob's team, celebrated the end of Zane's Midway football career at his football party (middle school football here we come!), and of course we had Thanksgiving!  It's been a fun, busy couple of weeks around here!

The rest of the month looks just as wild!  This weekend Bob and Quinn are off to North Carolina for a big dual tournament with some of the best teams in that area.  It'll be a challenge for our guys for sure!  And I'll be home with Zane and Beck getting ready to take the high school team up to Gatlinburg the following weekend for a super fun stay in a super cool cabin.  Bob and I are chaperoning - and responsible for feeding the whole crew.  I'm prepping the coolers and crock pots!

I hope you had a great second half of November and are gearing up for the rest of the Holiday season!  We're mostly focused on wrestling mats, but we DID manage to get our trees and outside decorations up!  Christmas presents are mostly ordered/obtained too!  I love this time of year!

Picture of the Week 11/11/2021

Wrestling wrestling wrestling - It's taken over my life.  And I love it all!  It's my favorite time of year!

I love this season and this sport.  (Although I do kinda hate that it overlaps all the holidays...  Someday I will relish the idea of an elaborate and calorie-rich cookie tray again...)

So many wrestling things going on...

First - Spencer had his first official collegiate match last weekend.  I am just so proud of him.  My parents and I went down to watch him and despite a 0-2 record for the tournament, I can't help but be in awe of how well he's doing.  He's just so settled.  He's figured out the college life and has his priorities right where they need to be.  He's doing well in his classes, competitive in the wrestling room, and working on finding a summer internship and nailing down his summer plans.  He's thriving in Charleston and it makes my mama-heart so full!

Second - Quinn has won his wrestle off to earn a spot at 138lbs on our varsity team this year.  (The team is SO big, nearly 70 strong, that he will likely get pushed to fight for this spot all year.)  I'm so thrilled for him to be in the Varsity A line-up (yes, we also have a Varsity B team...) this year.  He's worked hard to earn his spot!  And yet, when the team goes to their first competition this weekend, he will not be there.  Why?  Because he's taking a trip with his church Small Group to Chattanooga for the weekend.  His faith is so much stronger than mine was at his age and I love love love that he leans into it.  He's just an all-round cool dude.

Third - Zane also won a wrestle-off this week to earn a spot at 125 lbs on the middle school duals team.  This is a pretty big feat for a 6th grader!  Our youth program this year has blossomed to over 50 kids.  Zane is a leader in that room and he transitioned from football to wrestling without missing a beat.  I really can't wait to watch him wrestle this year!  He's on the top end of the 12U age group and has a few years of experience under his belt now.  His club team coach asked him to travel with them to a duals tournament in Virginia Beach in December after watching his FIRST PRACTICE after football season.  Zane weighs the same as he did last year, but has grown 2-3 inches.  Should be a pretty fun season for him.

Fourth - Beckett is last, but certainly not least.  He's wrestling too and while he's not old enough for middle school duals just yet, he's got some individual tournaments coming up that should be pretty fun.  Beckett is pretty laid back about things in general, but he does have an aggressive side that tends to come out on the football field and the wrestling mat - when he wants to, he will.

And last - there's the parental-involvement...  Bob and I are having a really great time volunteering our time and talents to this sport and these teams.  It's fun.  I really enjoy helping new folks learn the ins and outs of wrestling.  And this week, I'm really really glad that all the high school team uniforms are finally distributed to the wrestlers.  They had transformed my dining room into a bit of a messy-storage room look.  Better Homes and Gardens is never gonna come knocking on my door!  (And that's A-OK with me!)

Here's a picture of me and Spencer at last weekend's Citadel Open and a couple of pictures of our vast organizational challenge - aka wrestling uniform distribution...

Picture of the Week - 4/22/2021

It's been "top down" kinda weather here recently.  Pollen aside (which has been really bad this year) it's been gorgeous and sunny and just enough chill in the air to need a jacket in the evenings.  Quinn has taken advantage by removing the doors and taking the top off his Jeep.  This makes Zane and Beckett practically vibrate with excitement because he drives them to wrestling practice in that Jeep on the weekends.  Can you think of anything cooler than having your big brother drive you around in a cool old Jeep while blaring music that I probably wouldn't let them listen to?  I think not...

There's not too much new news going on down here right now.  The boys are all gearing up for milestone testing and finals.  Learning is ramping down and reviewing (aka cramming) is ramping up.

Spencer and Quinn (really Zane and Beck too...  but lesser a bit) are both really busy.  They regularly go from school to work to gym to sleep.  Or school to wrestling to gym to sleep.  Or occasionally they squeeze in dinner with a friend or hang out somewhere working on a project.  I have a list of things that need to be discussed (not deep dark things, more like "are you gonna go with us to graduation?" kinda stuff) that I have to write on a piece of paper so I can pepper them with questions during the 5 minutes a day I see them.  It's pretty wild...

This week we have some folks in our basement building a closet into one of the rooms down there.  This closet is kinda massive.  It's going to be really nice!  Quinn has decided he wants to move down there this summer so he can have some privacy (currently he shares a bathroom with both Zane and Beck).  So we are working through some home improvement type things to make it a little more feasible for him to live down there.  After the closet guys leave, we paint and then some minor electrical stuff (this massive closet is going to need lights) and installation of a closet organizer and then we can start the process of moving boys all around.  Quinn's stuff is going downstairs, then his current room is getting a fresh coat of paint before Beckett moves in.  Finally we are going to spruce up the room Zane and Beck currently share.  It's a lot of small projects that will - realistically - take us all summer.  But it's fun kind of stuff that I'm excited to tackle.

Hope you are all having a great April!  Next week is a fun week for us with Prom (x2) and a weekend away for Bob and I which I've been looking forward to for ages.  More later...

Picture of the Week - 5/23/2019

We dropped Beckett off today - solo - for camp.  I guarantee it feels weirder for us here without him than it does for him there without all of us!  Upon drop-off, his counselor (who we instantly loved) had the kids fill out a little info sheet.  It was questions like "what are your hobbies, what are you looking forward to, what subject do you like best, etc.  One of the questions was "are you nervous about coming to camp"?  If so, what are you nervous about.  He was like "nope.  I pressed a bit and asked "Is there anything you are uncomfortable about?"  He looked at me like I was crazy and was like "nope".  Then, "when are you leaving?"

Safe to say he's going to have a blast!  We pick him back up on Saturday.

The other boys are all finishing up school tomorrow.  Spencer and Quinn have had a super weird schedule this week.  The basically only had to be at school when they had actual exams.  Quinn exempted out of almost all of his, so he's mostly just been lounging at home all week.

Safe to say I don't understand how high school works!!!  In any case, they both have a final tomorrow and then they are finished for the year and we will officially have a Sophomore and a Junior.  Weird.

Zane gets to have a special night tomorrow flying solo at my mom's house after finishing up his last day of 3rd grade.  He had a really great year.  Zane goes up to camp on Monday and spends next week up there.  I imagine he will be slightly more reserved than Beck was.  Fingers crossed that he bonds with his counselor as fast as Beck did!

Tomorrow is our 22nd wedding anniversary.  I'm so excited to get to celebrate with Bob.  He's got date plans all worked out and it will be a really great way to end a really tough week.  Nothing earth shattering or wrong - just too busy and too much going on - same story everyone has in May.

Next week - we start the craziness of a different schedule every week.  Spencer is right into summer football and both he and Quinn kick off the summer wrestling season.  No rest for the weary.  I leave next Friday for another week in Scotland.  At least the weather doesn't look too bad for this one...

Have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend everyone!

Picture of the Week - 4/11/2019

Hi everyone!  I'm BACK!  Wait - did anyone miss me?  Did anyone (other than my mom) even notice that I the POTW never made it out last week?  Anyone out there???

I had a travel day last Thursday and, if I'm being honest, forgot about the weekly email until I got home - at which point I was both exhausted and facing a lack of content.  So...  I skipped it!  I feel so liberated.  LOL

This week, you get a bunch of Brutus pictures because he's cute and I take too many picture of him and all my boys need haircuts.

We have had an interesting week...  Bob's been out of town for a few days, which he hardly ever does (and never during the week).  I'm always reminded that I am clearly a sub-standard house-maintenance partner when he's away because there's SO MUCH to do and I hardly ever do it...  He's back tonight.  Thank goodness!

Our logistics were complicated by 1) a puppy and 2) a series of all-day meetings at the office that I couldn't miss.  Thank goodness for grandparents who are willing to let out the dogs and grab the boys off the bus!

Last night was a particularly interesting evening as I went straight from the office to Quinn's lacrosse game (which they won) and on the way home got all the texts from Spencer (who chose to stay home) about the spider nest he exploded into my garage (think floating spiders from Charlotte's Web) and the home made flame thrower he made to take care of the situation.  Someday, after I clean up the spider carcasses, it'll make a funny story...  I suppose I'm glad he didn't burn down my house!  (He says he was safe because he chose to use carb cleaner as the flame thrower fuel - which is apparently mostly isopropyl alcohol which apparently burns cooler than wood...)

Teenage boys are simultaneously creative, self-sufficient and crazy.

And now I'm going back to taking pictures of the dog...

Picture of the Week - 12/6/2018

Goodness!!!

Some weeks I really struggle to find something interesting to share.  This week there's TOO much!!!  Where to start...

Last weekend Spencer and Quinn started a tournament on Friday night.  In this same tourney last year Spencer didn't make it out of Friday evening - it's a double elimination.  So we weren't sure what to expect this year...  what happened was NOT one of the options we had planned out.  LOL  Life is like that, right!!  Wrestling season is DEFINITELY like that!  Spencer ended up hyper extending his knee doing a takedown in his first match and was out for the weekend.  Quinn went 1-1 and pinned his second opponent to make it into Saturday competition.  I was so happy for Quinn!  He didn't last long on Saturday, BUT he got there and that's pretty darn awesome!  Check out this cool picture of the 2018/19 Varsity squad!  I'm so proud of my boys!

Zane and Beckett were also wrestling on Saturday in their very first wrestling tournament.  The pretty much got stomped, but they had a blast.  The were already asking when the next tournament is almost before they were even home.  They go again on the 16th.  Beckett got to wrestle 5 times and went 1-4 - he also lost a tooth during his second match.  If it's possible, the missing front tooth makes him even more irresistibly adorable.  Zane was in a weight class with only 3 kids in it, so he didn't get as many opportunities and went 0-2.  He was pretty bummed about the losses, but has spent a TON of time this week thinking about (and then talking about) exactly what his opponent did to beat him.  He learned a ton!

Then on Sunday we got a NEW PUPPY!!!!  I'm so so so excited!  His name is Brutus and he's a golden retriever.  He's really light colored and ridiculously cute.  He was born on September 15th and will be around 14 weeks old when we bring him home.  The timing was probably not ideal because of all the travel we have coming up (see below), but the breeder we found has a cool program where they will keep the puppy and complete training with it.  This is kind of like a win/win!  We got the puppy we wanted and when we bring him home hopefully he will already have MAD SKILLS!  LOL  We are picking him up the day after Christmas.

Tomorrow I am heading to Scotland for a week.  Both the time of the year and the meeting agenda for next week have me kind of dreading the trip.  Bright side...  the weather over there this weekend is going to be nicer than here - weird!  AND Edinburgh is pretty gorgeous at Christmastime.  So I'm going to find my silver lining...  as soon as I pack.  Until then I just feel unprepared!!!

While I'm gearing up for a UK trip, Bob is packing for a whirlwind trip to Orlando for a wrestling tournament.  He's driving 5 of the wrestlers and they leave at 5 AM Friday to return sometime in the wee hours of Sunday morning.  Thank goodness for Berber and Pappy - otherwise Zane would be in charge for 48 hours.  LOL

When I get home it will be mid-December and we will still have last minute shopping and wrapping and baking and a mini-vacay to Pigeon Forge (wrestling tourney) to cram in before Christmas.  We also have to prep for a PUPPY.  I'm just taking one step at a time - and maybe this will be the year of the New Years cookie platters...

Have a great week everyone!  If you are so inclined to send some "energy vibes" my way - I could use them!

Picture of the Week - 5/18/2018

I laid down in bed last night and suddenly remembered that I had never done the POTW.  That's pretty much the way the month of May goes in general.  I like May.  There are always lots of fun reasons to celebrate.  End of season parties and performances and award ceremonies and end-of-year events.  It's a transition time between spring sports and summer sports for us - so schedules are wacky.  There are projects to complete and last minute cramming (at least for the big boys).  There are always expectations (from teachers and kids) to squeeze activities and "stuff" into the work day.  And of course the paid job has an expectation that we are, you know, actually working.  It's busy and random and pretty chaotic.

So it's easy to forget stuff...

This week is pretty typical May.  Add in the catch-up from being gone and it's been a long week...

Zane and Beck got sent home from school on Tuesday with head lice.  *shudder*  So we've been dealing with that all week.  Daily checks with the nurse...  many hours of Nit Picking - literally...  pretty gross, TBH, but I think we are about over it.  We have one more treatment to do and I promised both the boys and the school nurse that we would spend time every day looking for nits.  They are HARD to see.  Particularly hard in sandy blonde heads...  There's never a good time for lice, but getting them in May is kind of like double-bad.

Wednesday night was Spencer's lacrosse banquet.  He won the "Wolverine of the Year" award for the JV team.  This is one of those "big/special" awards that the coaches pick.  They give out best attack/middie/defense and MVP awards and this one.  It's meant to be given to the kid on the team who can always be counted on to uphold the ideal of the team.  I consider it a "quality of character" award and am really very proud that Spencer won it.  He's a good kid.  :)

Tonight Quinn goes to the 8th grade formal.  It's kind of a right of passage in the transition from middle school to high school.  He's ready and excited to go.  He's going with some friends - so it should be a low key fun night for him!

This weekend Spencer goes to the high school athletic awards ceremony.  They will be recognizing a number of things - including multi-sport athletes.  Zane has a lacrosse tournament with his summer team.

Next week is the last week of school.  The boys have 4 days left after today.  The little boys leave next Thursday for their first sleep away camp (more on that next week) and Spencer/Bob are heading to Virginia Beach for a wrestling tournament.  If you could see the high school practice schedule on our calendars through the summer, you'd think we were crazy.  We are crazy...  Spencer will do 2-a-days most every day through the weeks because he wants to do the wrestling workouts and the football workouts until after the 4th of July, when he will focus on football.  Quinn will be doing wrestling and lacrosse...  it will be a whole summer of driving back and forth to the high school in between meetings or on conference calls.  Yay...

I thought I'd share a picture of me and Bob this week because I never really do that - and I also don't really have any good pictures of the boys.  I really need to get better about that because they are all growing up fast right now!

Have a great week!

Picture of the Week - 2/15/2018

You know that old saying "do as I say, not as I do"?  I happen to think that little saying is a pretty powerful parenting ideal.  I mean that's hard...  but it's something that Bob and I think about.  Goodness knows we aren't perfect at it!!!  I mean, we are FAR from perfect in general, but this is definitely one of those things that is "easier said than done".  Whoa - I'm on a roll...  Anyway...  one of the things that I hope our boys pick up from being raised in our house is the behaviors that support our core belief system.  There's a reason "Discipline equals freedom" is our family motto.  We believe you work for what you want and don't expect hand outs.  We have shattered most traditional gender roles in the home.  We protect those that are smaller or weaker than ourselves.  Education is important.  Luck is not a thing.  Actions always have consequences - and the consequences are owned by the person making the decision.  Sounds like a dreadful place to live now that I'm looking at it on paper...  LOL  We also hug - a lot!  So don't go off thinking we are running some kind of unfeeling and cold sweat camp!

I'm guessing that anyone who doesn't read these emails and just looks at the pictures will have the totally wrong idea looking at this picture of a hotel bed with too-soft hotel pillows sent the day after Valentine's Day.  This is definitely not an email about romance...  it's more about guilt and stress with a good sprinkle of trepidation thrown in for fun.  It's also a view that I've seen more in the last few weeks than my own home.

I've managed to get myself in over my head at work - again - and it's lead to one of those HARD working-mom phases of life.  I've had hard working-mom phases before - like when you have to leave a 3 month old for the first time.  When you have to lug a breast pump to Vegas for a conference.  When you miss games and events and milestones...  It's the clash of career and family.  I'm sure as heck not the first to struggle with the balance - and I know I won't be the last.  So I know I'll get through this phase...  but that doesn't erase the doubt and anxiety.

I think one of the major contributing factors to the discomfort of this current phase is that all of the different things adding work to my "plate" are also adding a level of engagement and enjoyment to the work that I haven't had in a long time.  I'm enjoying my job more than I have in ages.  And that should be awesome, but the problem is that this work comes with travel - a LOT of it - and that means I'm exchanging job satisfaction for family time.  I HATE that there has to be a trade-off.  And I have guilt about all of this!  The kind of guilt that wakes you in the night with its whispers.

I've been asked to join a number of different events and training opportunities at work recently.  All of these are things I consider to be big benefits and opportunities.  I have been "fast tracking" through leadership training.  This essentially means that I haven't even finished leadership training 1 and they've pulled me into leadership training 2.  There are lots of reasons they did this - all good - but it layers the work I have to do to "pass" these training events and essentially doubles both the work and the time required away from the house.  Have I mentioned lately that I work for a company headquartered in Scotland who views the cross-Atlantic flight the same way some companies would look at jumping a plane down to Orlando...

The leadership stuff would be fine, but then I was also selected as a Lean Leader (which is the training I'm doing this week).  This is something I'm actually really interested in.  I love processes and efficiency and reducing waste.  Many Lean principles are easily translated from work to home stuff (sorry Bob...  we may have to flowchart out our regular processes) and I just find them interesting.  Logistics is probably my true calling, so anytime I can combine what I get paid to do with stuff that I find interesting is a win/win.  My company is going through a Lean Transformation that started about 6 months ago.  I'm in Lean Leader wave 2 - which means I'm not the first group through this process, but would definitely be considered an early adopter.  We've spent the week so far talking about all the work that we have to do to first achieve certification (pass the coursework) and then how we are expected to help drive the change.

Change is hard!  Managing people through it is stressful.  It's a sorta normal part of managing people in general - because the only thing constant is (everyone say it with me) change...  but when the change comes fast and furious, I find myself spending as much time talking my employees and colleagues off ledges as I do getting actual work done.  My team just went through a reorganization.  My boss left the organization.  I have a new boss, new management team, new expectations.  new new new.  It's all good, but change is hard.  I want to help get this organization through the transformation and I really believe I can help people around me to become better, more efficient, more focused employees.  I can do it, but it all takes time - which is increasingly difficult to come by recently.

And then last week, 2 days into my week in Scotland, I was presented with a great honor and opportunity.  My company participates in and sponsors an executive MBA program with the University of Strathclyde in Glascow Scotland.  They select 2 employees to join this program every other year - one from the US and one from the UK.  The selected employees get to go through a specially developed curriculum focused on innovation and international business - resulting in an MBA for the 25 participants who go through each cycle.  I am starting my cycle next month and will graduate in July of 2021 - just after Spencer graduates from high school.  This is not going to be easy - from both a coursework and a travel perspective.  I will go to Glascow 6-7 times a year from next month through Sept of 2020 for classes and will have group-based assignments to complete on top of work and home and all that stuff that I'm already doing.  I am already apprehensive about how this will fit into our hectic lives...

But I'm also so excited about it.  What a great opportunity.  Clearly this is one of those things that you can't say no to - even though it was a hard decision knowing all the stuff I will miss at home while working through all this...  work.  I couldn't do this without the support freely offered up from both my parents and Bob.  They all said "we will do what we can to support you" and I know they mean it.  Bob is a saint.  Really...  he just picks up all the stuff that needs to be done and has never EVER made me feel guilty about the things I need to do for my job.  The guilt comes from within...  and it's pretty significant right now.

All of this is modeled behavior that I want my boys to see, learn from, and expect from themselves and the families they go on to build.  I couldn't imagine shying away from any of the stuff going on with my job right now because it's "hard".  What kind of message would that send to my boys?  I love the fact that they see the support system I have in place to allow me to go do these things.  I think it's so vitally important that they see their dad supporting me - and them - because that's what good men look like.  Believe me, I understand that the time we have with these boys is limited and it really does KILL ME that I am going to miss more of it, but at the end of the day, we are building men.  Men who need to understand what "good"* looks like and then strive to get there themselves.

*This is our version of "good".  Mine and Bob's.  It does not need to look like your version of good and if you find yourself somehow offended by what we are doing and where we place our core values, that's totally fine.  I don't share any of this to make any kind of claim that our version of good is better than anyone else's, so if you feel that way, that's on you.  And would lead me to recommend that you spend some time thinking about what your core values are and how strongly you feel about them because if you have a plan that you are executing your plan, then nothing I've shared here should be offensive...

If I miss a POTW here and there over the next 3 years, assume I'm on a plane somewhere...  otherwise, come along on this crazy journey with us.  I'm sure there will be ups and downs and wins and losses and maybe more than a few tears.  But that's life, y'all.  Let's pack as much into it as we can!

Tuesday we are off on our annual Buckeye cruise.  I'm desperately looking forward to spending more than 5 minutes with my husband.  And cold beer.  Cold beer sounds really lovely!

Picture of the Week - 1/25/2018

Anyone else having a hard time grasping the fact that January is almost over?  I swear Christmas was like 25 minutes ago!

This week has been a good one as we gear up for a February Calendar where I am going to spend 18/28 nights away from home.  I have a sneaking suspicion that I will be looking for February in my rear view mirror come March too...

Quinn started lacrosse practices this week.  He's having fun with his new team - and is ridiculously excited to be playing with a whole team of boys that are really good.  He's going to learn a ton this spring - and hopefully have a blast!

Spencer is still wrestling, which means he's missed a whole week of high school lacrosse evaluations.  The transition periods between sport's seasons for multi-sport athletes is terrible.  This year it's not really impacting any decisions that might be made because Spencer will play on JV and not really have a shot at varsity anyway.  But if he DID have a chance, the fact that evals is the same week as prep for the regional individual wrestling tournament stinks.  And he's going to have to end up making decisions about what sport to prioritize all through the summer.  So much schedule conflict!  He's planning on doing wrestling weight training AND lacrosse practices all spring.  He's nuts...  and busy...  and really motivated.

The little boys are still doing jiu jitsu and start lacrosse on Feb 5th.  The way the lacrosse practices worked out, Zane will be able to do both JJ and lacrosse through the spring and Beck will only miss one night of JJ because of conflict.  They are also ridiculously busy...  Bob and I laugh about the fact that our boys don't really know any different.  I think they think it's just normal to go to school, grab dinner, head back out for some kind of activity and then rinse/repeat.

Last Friday night was the Mother/Son event at the elementary school.  I think I've mentioned this before  but I will have a son at that elementary school for 14 straight years.  That's a lot of cold pizza and laser tag/ice skating/bowling!  LOL  The picture this week is the boys while we were waiting for our neighbor to leave.  They were racing back and forth in the hall and having a blast because "running at school is prohibited".  Ha!  I thought it was cool to get a picture of them in their mostly deserted school with a completely empty hallway behind them!  BTW - their faces are painted because it was a black-light/laser tag event.  Just picture a dark gym full of noisy boys with laser guns.  Good times...

Saturday Spencer wrestles for a spot in the Individual sectionals.  They will take the top 4 wrestlers at each weight class to sectionals.  There are 7 schools in our region.  There are 2 guys we know he can't beat...  like I love him, but there's no chance...  so that leaves 2 spots for 5 guys.  Decent odds...  we shall see what happens!

Then Sunday we have a parent meeting for football.  For next year.  You know...  because there aren't enough things to think about right now!   HA!  I'm sure they just want us to start fundraising...  anyone wanna buy mulch?

Have a great week everyone!

Picture of the Week - 10/12/2017

Happy middle of October-that-still-feels-like-August!

I was in Kansas City this week for a conference.  It was an exhausting conference, if I'm being honest.  There weren't enough people there, so the poor 3 of us they sent spent FAR too long standing in the booth and spoke to FAR too many people.  I would love to crawl in bed and hibernate for about 12 hours.

Instead, we are doing the divide-and-conquer four way tango tonight.  I've got Quinn at a Band concert.  Bob is watching Spencer's game and the Little boys are getting dropped off/picked up for their football practices (in different places because, well...  that's how this fall rolls.)

I thought I'd share these hilarious (at least to me) pictures that Bob sent me while I was gone.  Apparently Zane taught himself how to raise one eyebrow from watching something on YouTube and is super proud of the new party trick.  LOL  They sure brought a much needed smile to my face when I got them!

Spencer's last regular season football game is tonight.  This weekend Zane has a bye-week, so only 1 football game, 1 HS lacrosse game, 1 youth lacrosse clinic and 2 U15 lacrosse games.  Oh and I have car pool duty for church.  Piece of cake...  I'm off to Vegas next week for User Group.  This one requires more preparation than this week, but should also include more sitting!  Never thought I'd be so excited for a chair!  :)

Have a great week everyone - and if you have some fall temperatures, send them this way!

Picture of the Week - 9/7/2017

So I thought it might be kind of fun to share how my day went today.  This is not because I'm whining about it.  Actually, it was a pretty OK day.  This is more just so that someday my boys might read this and realize that we were really busy!

  • 4:40 - My alarm went off (I set it so I can snooze a bit...)
  • 5:55 - Out the door and into "my" pickup truck - which I don't like...  at all
  • 7:07 - arrive in my office and find that the HR lady who shares my office when I'm not there beat me to work and was in my spot.  Despite my name being on the plate on the door, I still felt guilty that I made her go back to her cube.
  • Series of meetings - none of which all that interesting - including a meeting straight through lunch - ending with a customer call in which I thought I'd be there for morale support and to answer the odd question and ended up speaking, almost exclusively, for around 75 minutes.  Not what I expected...  sometimes it's good to be able to virtually tap dance!
  • 3:36 - leave the office, knowing that I've missed the window that minimizes the traffic home
  • 4:56 - walk in the door after dealing with super frustrating traffic.  Maybe it's extra people from the Florida and Georgia evacuations.  Maybe it's just a busy traffic day, but it was a LOT of cars to deal with!  Thank goodness Bob had dinner ready because I was a good 45 minutes later than I wanted to be getting home.
  • 5:10 - load Beckett and Zane into the big car (cause I'm not voluntarily driving the pick-up around all evening!) and take them to Midway Park.
  • 5:20 - remind Beckett's coach that I'm having to do a "drop and run" which they really don't like you to do with 5 year olds...  because I'm on taxi duty...  and then squeeze Beck into his pads
  • 5:40 - leave Beck and head to the other side of Midway to drop off Zane.  Again explain the "drop and run" requirement.  Squeeze Zane into his pads
  • 6:10 - leave Zane and head home to get Quinn
  • Spent 20 minutes watching the news to see what's going on with the hurricane.  I may be addicted to Hurricane coverage.  I'm horrified at the mess Harvey left and worried about all the destruction coming with Irma is going to cause.  What a mess!
  • 6:25 - leave with Quinn to go to his lacrosse practice at Sawnee Mt Park
  • 6:50 - leave Quinn as soon as the coach arrives at the field and head back to Midway
  • Spend 15 minutes staring into the sun while Beckett's team finishes practice and runs sprints
  • 7:05 - load Beck into the car after stripping him out of sweaty pads and head back up to Zane's field
  • Spend the next hour alternating between watching Zane, chatting with some friends, and trying to locate Beckett, who kept disappearing.  Pleasant evening at this point - aside from staring into the blinding sun.
  • 8:05 - attempt to leave Midway Park only to spend the next 15 minutes in traffic.  Seriously - where are all these people going and why aren't they at home?  Oh right...  they are probably out schlepping kids to and from a wide variety of "stuff"
  • 8:20 - arrive at the high school to wait for Spencer to arrive (via bus) from his away football game.  Worth noting at this point that Bob spent the evening at the game (not just ignoring me and the taxi duties) and by this point had left the football game and was at Sawnee Mt to collect Quinn
  • Spend the next 25 minutes with the little boys, who by this time were overtired and hungry, literally BOUNCING around the car.  Windows down.  LOUD.  They were, honestly, completely incapable of sitting still for more than about 14 seconds.  Those 25 minutes wrecked my nerves way worse the Atlanta rush hour traffic - even WITH the accident and flashing lights and Waze-suggested detour.
  • 8:47 - Spencer arrives in the car and immediately stinks up the whole place.  Boy stink is bad.  Post-football game boy stink is REALLY bad...
  • 9:02 - arrive home and pour myself a fancy plastic Tervis Tumbler full of my favorite wine while the boys eat a very nutritious second dinner of Tostinos pizza rolls.
  • It's now 9:29 and I'm wrapping up this POTW, which I love writing, but does occasionally add a bit of stress to my "to do" list.  Next stop is pajamas, finishing my fancy glass of wine, and curling up for another episode of Game of Thrones.  (Another week I will have to share the strange path Bob and I have taken to get to the final season of GoT.  It involves starting with actually reading the books and ends with us trying to remember, after each episode, whether THAT actually happened in the books or not.  The discussions are nearly as entertaining as the actual show.)
BTW - Spencer won his game 35-0.  His team is stacked.  These boys are going to be SUPER fun to watch for the next 4 years.  The head varsity coach has come to both the Freshmen games instead of the JV games.  I think he's looking forward to watching this guys for the next 4 years too!

Zane and Beck both have games this Saturday at 9 am.  It's a divide-and-conquer Saturday morning.  Not my favorite, but it DOES mean we will be done with our commitments by early afternoon!

Have a great week everyone - if you are in Irma's path, stay safe!  That storm is nothing to mess with...

Cheers!
